Sir Richard Branson, 51: Chairman of Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Express, etc. Challenger to run National Lottery. Hot air balloonist. Flirted with Tony Blair and won a knighthood while never quite one of the incrowd. Standard/MORI poll on London's choice for Mayor gave him 26%.

Trevor Phillips, 48: Bright ex-broadcaster, now deputy chairman of the Greater London Assembly. Close friend and protege of Peter Mandelson. In running for Mayor last time, damaged by a series of blunders. Offended many by suggesting Mr Livingstone was racist.
