Supermarket pledges to cut salt in foods

A leading supermarket today moved to cut the amount of salt in food such as pizzas, ready meals and cereals.

Food retailers and officials meeting for a "salt summit" at the Department of Health heard Professor Graham Mac-Gregor, of St George's Hospital, say 35,000 deaths a year could be prevented if people halved their daily salt intake.

In response, Sainsbury's said it will reduce salt in five popular foods within three years. These are pizzas, ready meals, sandwiches, cereals and soups.
