Summer finally over after sunny weekend gives way to cooler weather

Hot day: Sunbathers make the most of the weekend weather
12 April 2012

The last of the summer sun appears to be on its way out from today, forecasters said.

The UK enjoyed a warm weekend, with the mercury rising above 20C (68F) in southern England.

After a warm but cloudy Saturday, blue skies and sunshine dominated yesterday.

Temperatures hit 22C (72F) in Lee-on-Solent, Hampshire, and 20C in St James' Park, London, according to forecasters.

But from today it will be cooling gradually with temperatures today at around 18C or 19C (64F or 66F). Scotland could even experience an overnight frost by the middle of the week.

Paul Mott, forecaster for MeteoGroup said: "It has been a fine day over many areas with plenty of sunshine across most of England and Wales.

"But it's set to get cooler over the next few days.

"It's going to be a slow cool-down through this week although it will become quite a bit cooler during the nights with temperatures closer to 0C - the first signs of winter.

"Daytime temperatures in Scotland by Wednesday will be down to 12C (54F) while in England temperatures will go down to 14C (57F)."
