A 36ft sperm whale beached on a man-made island has died despite rescue efforts, it was announced today.

The whale was confirmed dead at around 11am today after spending more than 24 hours stranded on a sand bank at Sutton Bridge, in The Wash, off the Lincolnshire coast.

Tony Woodley, spokesman for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) said: "At approximately 11am today the stranded sperm whale off the Lincolnshire coast was confirmed dead.

"BDMLR Marine Mammal Medics confirmed the animal was dead after checking for an eye reflex and watching for signs of breathing.

"Actually diagnosing death can be difficult with these large species as they may only breath once every few minutes."

The confirmation of death came after a failed attempt at 7am to save the whale.
