Shut-eye for Shattered Claire

13 April 2012

The latest contestant to be eliminated from the TV wake-athon Shattered today described how she felt 'fantastic' after finally getting some sleep.

Claire Muscat, 28, a mother of two from Cardiff spent 111 hours awake but left the programme last night after losing out in a challenge with another
player.

She and fellow contestant Dean competed in a toss the coin competition where they bet points on the outcome but the game was tied.

The results of scientific tests, which showed how sleepy they were, were then compared and Claire's score was the lowest.

She is the fifth of the 10 contestants to depart from the week-long Channel 4 series. Salma, Ellen and Craig were eliminated after failing tests, while Lucy decided to leave after feeling unwell.

'I've had six hours' sleep today and I feel fantastic,' Claire said.

Asked how she felt on missing out on the £97,000 prize money she replied: 'The money is the last thing on my mind, I haven't really thought about it.

'I felt cheated, it was a terrible way to go out on the toss of a coin, there was no skill involved in the task.

'But I really enjoyed everything about the show. I got to learn things I would never have learnt unless I was in there.'

The remaining contestants are trainee police officer Clare, 19, from Poole, Dorset; Chris, 22, a Canadian student and part-time waiter living in London; Jimmy, 33, a youth counsellor from Brighton; Jonathan, 30, a psychiatrist and Dean, 25, who works in marketing, both from London.

They are aiming to stay awake for a week, although show safety experts are allowing occasional strategic dozing breaks to help them through.

If anyone nods off during the allotted times, they lose £1,000 from the £100,000 prize fund which now stands at £97,000.

Speaking about who could win the money, Claire said: 'I think if Clare can keep herself together she's got a good chance of winning.

'The guys are naturally competitive and they could dismiss her as not being a potential winner and just focus on beating each other.'
