Shop fire causes delays in Oxford St

A block of shops and offices in Oxford Street was badly damaged by a fire this morning.

Part of the busy shopping street was blocked off and buses redirected as firemen fought the blaze at a historic building, near Bond Street Tube station and the junction of South Molton Street.

The fire began just after midnight and six fire engines were sent. Police officers were also called to help redirect traffic around the sealed off area.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said almost half of the Victorian building's top floor was damaged. The cause is not known but an investigation has been launched.

No one was injured.
