Ryder calls the cameras

13 April 2012

Former chart star Shaun Ryder is to star in a fly-on-the-wall BBC show as he battles back from the brink, it was announced today.

The star, at one time a heroin and crack addict, will be seen as he tries to get his life back on track in the programme Shaun Ryder Comes Clean.

Film-maker Richard Macer - who has profiled glamour girl Jordan - spent several months following the ex-Happy Mondays and Black Grape star for BBC3.

He began following Ryder in the summer and is still continuing to film him.

The singer hit rock bottom about a year ago while living in Australia as his drug problems continued, his assets were frozen and he was locked in litigation with a former manager.

The film sees him out of rehab and trying to adopt a healthy lifestyle and promote a new album, but still on the verge of bankruptcy.

Ryder is seen with his family and visiting the site of the legendary Hacienda nightclub in Manchester which was the launchpad for the Mondays.

A BBC spokeswoman said: "It's pretty full-on and you will certainly come away with an opinion on the man."
