Public hearings on casino plans

An official investigation is being announced today into proposals for super-casinos in London.

The London Assembly is set to launch public hearings to examine the likely benefits - and the effect on the quality of life of residents living nearby.

Planned sites for super-casinos include the Millennium Dome and Wembley stadium. Developers, councils and residents could be called to City Hall to give evidence next month.

It follows a decision by Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell to limit the number of super casinos across the country to eight.

By the end of next year an independent panel will provide Ms Jowell with its suggested sites for the casinos.
