Protesters scale Christmas tree

12 April 2012

Campaigners have climbed Trafalgar Square's Christmas tree in a protest about emissions from the Sellafield nuclear plant.

Two protesters, dressed as Santa Claus, climbed to the top of the 75ft Norwegian spruce and unfurled a banner, while others gathered at the bottom.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: "We were called to Trafalgar Square shortly after 11am and discovered two protesters at the top of the tree.

"The protest, which is ongoing, is believed to be over emissions from Sellafield. We are monitoring the situation."

Princess Mette-Marit of Norway turned on the tree's lights at a ceremony on Thursday night.

Each year, the people of Oslo present London with a Norwegian spruce as a thank you for help during the Second World War.
