Premier League clubs have shattered the British record for spending in a single transfer window this summer, and there are still more than three days left before it closes.

Analysis by Deloitte shows a current spending total of £725million, which surpasses last year’s record by almost £100m already.

Manchester United broke the record for a fee paid by a British club when they splashed out £59.7m on Angel di Maria, and Even Arsenal have loosened their purse strings – spending a total of £63m on Alexis Sanchez, Calum Chambers and Mathieu Debuchy.

Everton, another club known for its frugality, have also splashed the cash, breaking their transfer record with the £28m purchase of striker Romelu Lukaku.

And with Arsenal still needing a striker, and Manchester United weighing up expensive deals for Arturo Vidal of Juventus and Ajax’s Daley Blind, there is potential for the summer spending to reach even greater levels in the coming days.

Dan Jones, partner in Deloitte's Sports Business Group, said: "Considering that in each of the last two summer windows more than 20% of total Premier League clubs’ spending has occurred on deadline day, there is still potential for a significant increase in that figure."

As well as the summer’s World Cup driving big-money buys, the main factor behind the increased spending has been the greater revenues Premier League clubs now have because of improved broadcast deals.

Deloitte’s research showed that last season the average Premier League club received around £25m more in central broadcast distributions than they did in 2012/13, which has fuelled the collective summer splurge.
