Playwright's plea to save Africa showcase

Emer Martin12 April 2012

Bonnie Greer has called for a halt to the sale of a centre of African arts, history and culture in central London after trustees decided the building was too expensive to run.

Her plea comes after Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Mayor Boris Johnson backed protesters demanding that the Africa Centre in Covent Garden not "be swept away" in a secret sale.

Greer, pictured, said: "I think London is one of the great cities of Africa. In the US we know London as the centre of the African diaspora and when I first arrived in the UK the Africa Centre was one of the first places I sought out.

"It's London that brings together all the inter-cultural ideas; it's London where people meet to have conferences and show new cultural works; it's London where people come to write books and that is why I am supporting those who want to save the Africa Centre."
