Mother who left child in car jailed

13 April 2012

A mother who left her toddler locked in a car while she went clubbing has been jailed for three months.

Christiana Ribas, 28, left her 18-month-old daughter in freezing cold temperatures while she went to the Elemental nightclub in Oxford Street, Manchester.

Ribas, of Merchants Quay, Salford, Greater Manchester, pleaded guilty to charges of child cruelty, driving without a licence and failing to provide an alcohol specimen when she appeared before Manchester Magistrates' Court yesterday.

District Judge Alan Berg jailed the mother for three months and disqualified her from driving for two years.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed the incident had occurred on February 21 this year.

Detective Constable Ian Yendell said he could not comment on the specifics of the case, but warned people not to leave their children in cars.

He added: "The dangers of leaving children alone in cars is that they can become too hot or too cold and suffer exposure or dehydration.

"It is a criminal offence to leave a child in a position where they may suffer harm or injury.

"If you leave a child unsupervised, anything can happen to them. It's irresponsible.

"The car could be stolen with the child in it, and there are other risks to the child.

"If a child is left, then social services and the police can become involved."
Nobody from the club was available for comment.
