Man U to launch transfer probe

13 April 2012

MANCHESTER United has announced it will conduct a 'thorough review' of its recent transfer deals following allegations of financial impropriety.

English soccer's richest and most successful club has been rocked by accusations of irregularities involving the signings of US goalkeeper Tim Howard, Brazilian midfielder Kleberson and French forward David Bellion.

The controversy has called manager Alex Ferguson's position into question, with the club's major stockholders opposing moves to give him a two-year contract extension.

Manchester United chairman Roy Gardner and the board of directors released a long statement to the Stock Exchange to defend the club's transfer procedures and try to defuse the growing furor.

'Manchester United believes its processes and policies are among the most rigorous in football,' it said.

'Although the media have reported various allegations, Manchester United has received no documentary evidence from any part to support these allegations. However, the board of Manchester United will conduct a thorough internal review of the recent transfer dealings.'

It said 'any changes or improvements in controls required' ascertained from the review would be published and implemented before the next transfer window in June 2004.

In addition, the company intends to seek support from the FA Premier League for new guidelines in respect of dealing with agents.
