Look who's in the news

Abul Taher|Metro13 April 2012

If proof were needed that we are living in a media savvy age, look no further than the latest edition of Who's Who.

Time was when the chunky tome was little more than an elite selection of the aristocracy, judges and politicians.

But 2004's entries include such TV notables as Katie Derham, Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Kirsty Young.

All in their 30s, they have earned early recognition for the part they play in our fast-paced, information-driven world.

ITV's Derham and Channel 4's Guru-Murthy are Establishment enough - they went to Oxbridge and include golf in their hobbies. Young, whose major TV innovation was to sit at the edge of the desk to read the Channel 5 news, did not go to university and says she enjoys laughter.

Metro columnist Guru-Murthy said last night: 'I am more tickled than honoured that the book has the air of the Establishment about it. Anyway, the only people who ever read Who's Who are journalists, because they need to look up people. It's hardly bathroom reading.'

More media people were included in the book because 'the media is becoming the new Establishment', he added.

There are more than 1,000 new entries this year, including Titanic actress Kate Winslet, 29, Hollywood veteran Robert De Niro, 60, and Hillary Clinton.

This year's youngest name - and one of the youngest ever - is Laura Anne Jones, 24, a former £5-an-hour waitress turned Tory Welsh Assembly member.

She came to prominence by being pictured in a flimsy pink dress with no bra.
