'London heist car' seized in South Africa

A CAR suspected of involvement in cash robberies across London has been seized in Durban with "significant" amounts of money hidden in it.

Local police said today the cash, in pound notes, was hidden in the seats of the Toyota which was found yesterday in a container on a cargo ship which had sailed from Britain. The officers also found a handgun in the container.

Two detectives from the Met's Flying Squad have travelled to Durban in what is described as an "ongoing inquiry".

Superintendent Henry Budhram, of the South African Police Service, said: "We received a tip-off about the car carrying stolen money from cash heists in London." The car was shipped out of an unidentified port last week.

Scotland Yard detectives were helping police in South Africa with the investigation of the cash and robberies, which British police suspect were carried out by foreigners across London. No arrests have yet been made in South Africa but there have been three in Britain.
