Los Angeles was on alert fearing a repeat of the Rodney King riots after a jury in the trial of a white police officer accused of assaulting a black teenager failed to reach a verdict.

Jurors said they were deadlocked about whether an officer who was caught on videotape carrying out a rough arrest of Donovan Jackson, 16, was guilty.

The trial of officer Jeremy Morse has drawn comparisons with the Rodney King case in 1992, which provoked severe rioting.
