The parents of Meredith Kercher today blamed the supporters of their daughter's killer for prolonging their agony.

Miss Kercher's mother, Arline, said enlisting Hillary Clinton in Amanda Knox's appeal battle was not only "desperate" but added to the family's pain.

The 22-year-old's supporters insist she did not get a fair trial and have expressed worries over "anti-American" bias in the Italian court.

Secretary of State Mrs Clinton has said she will meet "anyone who has a concern", including senator Maria Cantwell from Knox's home state of Washington.

Mrs Kercher, 64, below, did not feel there was anti-American feeling at the Perugia trial.

"Having them looking to lodge an appeal was tough enough - and now this. I just do not know where they are going by getting people in high places involved," she said from her home in Coulsdon, Surrey.

"Everything seemed to be done fairly. It seems a bit desperate. We are still getting over the sentencing. The whole thing has gone in a blur."

Knox and her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, 25, were found guilty of killing student Miss Kercher, 21, in Perugia in November 2007 and were jailed on Friday.
