With a walking stick and his seven-year-old daughter Eva providing suppport, Ray Davies had a date at Buckingham Palace yesterday.

The Kinks singer-songwriter - one of British pop's most enduring talents - was collecting his CBE from the Queen two months after being shot in the leg by a mugger in New Orleans.

The 59-year- old star was also accompanied by his sister, Joyce.

Davies, who wore sunglasses throughout the investiture, admitted the wound to his leg had been more serious than he first feared.

But he said he hoped to recover in time for a set of gigs he has coming up. 'I will get better and I'll be back jumping around on stage,' he promised fans.

He described how he chased after the mugger when he was attacked in the U.S. in January.

'I was walking down a quiet street with my girlfriend,' he said. 'We were attacked. I chased after him. I have been asking myself why. One never knows how to react.

'Other people have said they would do the same.'

The Kinks were one of the most

influential bands of the Sixties, with classic hits such as Waterloo Sunset, You Really Got Me, All Day and All of The Night, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Sunny Afternoon and Lola.

Of his CBE for services to music, Davies said: 'This is for the people who supported my music over the years. I'm kind of reluctant to collect rewards. I usually back out of ceremonies. I'm kind of a shy person. This is for the fans of my music. It's theirs.'

Davies said the Queen asked about his injury. He added: 'We both said how we lived in such difficult times.'
