Murdered: The body of British student Meredith Kercher was found in her bedroom

Prosecutors have closed their investigation into the murder of British student Meredith Kercher, calling for three people to be charged with her murder.

Twelve box files of evidence against Meredith's flatmate Amanda Knox, 20, Knox's boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, 24, and former basketball player Rudy Guede, 21, were sent to their lawyers today.

They now have 20 days to study the documents and decide whether to ask to be questioned again or raise objections to prosecutor Giuliano Mignini's probe.

It began more than seven months ago after Meredith, 20, was found semi naked and with her throat cut in the bedroom of her student digs in the central Italian town of Perugia.

According to Mignini's final conclusions all three should be formally charged with murder and sexual violence as well as stealing 300 Euro from Meredith and two credit cards.

Knox, who dubbed herself Foxy Knoxy, and Sollecito should also be charged with simulating a crime, in that they threw a rock through a bedroom window to make her death look like a burglary gone wrong.

Finally Knox should also be charged with slander after she falsely accused barman Patrick Lumumba, 38, of killing Meredith, leading to his arrest and detention for two weeks before he was released.

According to the official documentation Meredith was first "strangled and then had her throat slashed in two places with a knife," by the three.

It added that she was "forced to undergo sexual acts with manual and or genital penetration."

After the twenty day period is over, prosecutor Mignini will formally request that they be sent for trial and a preliminary hearing is expected to be set for September.

Prosecution sources said that forensic evidence, primarily bloody footprints, put Knox and Sollecito at the scene as well as DNA found on a kitchen knife.

Meredith's DNA is said to be on the tip of the blade and that of Knox's on the handle of the eight inch kitchen knife. DNA from Sollecito was also found on a bloody strap of Meredith's bra.

There was no immediate reaction from any of the three's legal teams. All three are in custody and all deny any involvement in the murder.
