'Idol' viewers are racist, says Elton

Metro13 April 2012

Elton John yesterday accused American TV viewers of being 'incredibly racist'. The 57-year-old made the comment after sitting as a guest judge on American Idol, the US version of ITV's Pop Idol.

His voice echoed a chorus of dissent that followed last week's shock exit of black vocalist Jennifer Hudson, considered one of the top talents among those vying for a recording contract. After hearing her and other wannabe pop stars perform his songs, he said: 'The three people I was really impressed with - and they just happened to be black, young female singers - and they all seem to be landing in the bottom three. I find it incredibly racist.' The results moved show host Ryan Seacrest to remind the show's 20million viewers that the series was a talent hunt and not a popularity contest. Producers at Fox TV declined to comment.
