Homer's family secret is out

The creator of popular TV cartoon The Simpsons today shocked fans by claiming the family's father Homer is in fact Canadian.

Matt Groening has revealed that his father, on whom the tubby beer-lover is based - is from Winnipeg.

The loveable ne'er-do-well has always been seen as the stereotypical American dad. "I hope Canadians won't hold it against the show now that they know," Groening said.

"We were counting on Canadians feeling superior to the Simpsons as being doltish Americans but now the secret is out."
