Football fan charged with racially abusing Darren Bent's mother

A Sunderland football fan will appear in court today charged with racially abusing England striker Darren Bent's mother.

John Davison, 26, of Chester-le-Street, is accused of abusing Shirley Bent after her son's team played Wigan Athletic in November last year.

The incident is alleged to have taken place in the away supporters' car park at the DW Stadium in Wigan.

Davison was charged with committing an offence under the Racially Aggravated Section Five Public Order Act.

The hearing is at Wigan Magistrates Court.
