2. Action adventure - Such films produce a 'ruthless streak' in both sexes, so a dose of swashbuckle could be the tonic we all need before asking for a pay rise or promotion.

3. Thrillers - Both men and women admitted to feeling in need of love after watching. if you're looking for love, then the cinema foyer could be the place to go when thrillers are on.

4. Romantic comedies - These films make both men and women feel more positive and open-minded. This could be the reason they are universally chosen as a 'compromise' film.

5. Horror - Men are more easily scared by horror films while women are more likely to see the funny side. This could be the ideal choice for women to assess their partner's bravery.
