Excite UK set to shut up shop

BT-backed internet company Excite UK will cease trading on Friday with the loss of 48 jobs after failing to find new investors to keep the operation afloat. Its excite.co.uk website is one of the 25 most popular in Britain with 1.3m registered members.

Users of its e-mail service will lose their accounts and are advised to save addresses from inboxes before the shutters come down on its Charlotte Street offices on 21 December. BTOpenworld, which owned 42% of Excite UK, has declined to take on the operation.
