Driver jailed for killing cyclist

12 April 2012

A lorry driver who crushed a cyclist under his wheels when he made an illegal left turn to "save time" was jailed for two years today.

John Altunay, 34, of Gillingham, ignored clearly marked no left-turn signs while driving alongside film producer Nicholas Frye in Kensington last May.

He claimed he did not see 53-year-old Mr Frye because of his "blind spot". But a jury at Blackfriars Crown Court convicted Altunay of causing death by dangerous driving last month.

Judge David Martineau told Altunay the fatality occurred because he had deliberately disobeyed signs telling him he could not turn left.
