Driver arrested over Spanish orphan crash

12 April 2012

Spanish police have arrested a driver they say caused the horrific crash which orphaned a two-year-old British girl.

Cecily Eastwood was the only member of her family to survive the collision in north-west Spain on Wednesday.

Her father, Nigel Eastwood, 40, a consultant anaesthetist at a Stoke on Trent hospital, his wife Rebecca Jane, 37, and their seven-year-old son Alexander all died.

Today police said Mrs Eastwood, who was driving, was forced on to the wrong side of the road by the arrested man, causing the pile-up which also killed two others. The man could be charged with involuntary manslaughter.

A Civil Guard spokesman said: "The driver of the car carrying the English family had no option but to swerve the vehicle on to the opposite side of the road to avoid a collision."

Cecily, was pulled from the wreckage by rescuers. She is in hospital with a broken leg and her grandparents are arriving today.
