A little alcohol does you good, say experts

Moderate drinking could be better for you than abstention.

Two drinks a day for men and one for women usually do more good than harm, says the US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse.

It protects against heart disease but can increase breast cancer in women by 10 per cent.

The research only showed benefits for the over-45s. It was unclear whether a lifetime of moderate drinking might help the heart but harm the liver.
