Cruz and Berry's bad hair day

Ouch! What's going on with the hair, Penelope?

One captured the heart of Hollywood star Tom Cruise with her beauty, while the other starred as a bikiniclad Bond girl and has been voted the world's sexiest woman.

But, in their latest film roles, Penélope Cruz and Halle Berry are almost unrecognisable.

Oscar-winner Berry, 37, appears with little make-up and unkempt hair in the psychological horror film Gothika. It is a long step from her stylish looks alongside 007 in Die Another Day.

Berry plays a criminal psychologist who wakes up one day in her own mental hospital.

She discovers she is accused of murdering her husband but has no memory of the crime, then finds out evil spirits are at work.

Cruz looks even less glamorous - and nothing like the beautiful woman who starred in Captain Corelli's Mandolin and Vanilla Sky.

The Spanish-born 29-year-old plays Chloe, a charismatic but deranged mental patient. The film also stars Robert Downey Jnr as a fellow psychiatrist and British actor Bernard Hill.

Fans of Berry can look forward to her returning to a more glamorous role next year.

The actress will star as Catwoman in a spin-off from the Batman series, although she insisted that - while the superhero was sexy - she would be no pushover, adding: "She's nothing nice."
