Courtney's bloody night

Out of control: Courtney's impromptu gig goes wrong

You know how it goes... you make a fool of yourself in front of millions of TV viewers, you get locked out of an apartment, then you go off down the club and get arrested.

It's the sort of night you would love to forget...

But today, troubled rocker Courtney Love must be wondering what exactly went wrong.

Love - former frontwoman for Hole - began her evening with a rambling appearance on chat king David Letterman's show, during which she repeatedly flashed her breasts.

She joked about her court appearance on drug charges 24 hours earlier, for which she turned up two hours late and annoyed the judge with a series of interruptions.

'The judge was cool,' she told Letterman. 'I'm not in trouble.'

The widow of Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain was next spotted in the streets of downtown New York, shoeless and wearing a see-through top and shorts after getting locked out of a friend's apartment.

After much banging on the door and complaining, the landlord of the flat eventually let her in.

Unfortunately for Love, the evening did not end there. For it was during a late-night surprise appearance at a rock show in a small nightclub that her problems really began.

While performing a number of songs, the 39-year-old was accused of wildly flinging her microphone stand into the audience and injuring a 24-year-old fan. Love was arrested and questioned by police. A tearful Love was released five hours later, but must return at a later date for further questioning about the incident.

A spokesman for the club, Plaid, said: 'It was pretty bloody. She didn't know she hurt someone and felt terrible about it, but she didn't feel she was guilty of a crime either.'
