City tops the high earners' league

13 April 2012

THE City of London has been named the country's highest earning area with an average full-time income of more than £50,000 per year.

Eight of the capital's boroughs also make the top 10 of income areas, with the highest 23 in the list coming from London and the South-East, a GMB union survey has calculated.

After the City, where the average income is £50,905, come Tower Hamlets (£ 42,027), Islington (£39,635) and Westminster (£37,213). Bracknell Forest (£35,197) and Wokingham (£33,353) are the only non-London areas in the top 10.

Bottom of the league - and fuelling ongoing debate about the North-South divide - is the Scottish Borders, where an average wage is £18,491.

Kevin Curran, general secretary of the GMB said: 'For a successful economy, all workers need to be recognised for their value, no matter where they live.'
