Charity hails 'huge success' of Water on Tap campaign

Mark Prigg12 April 2012

International charity Wateraid today backed the Evening Standard's Water On Tap campaign, hailing it as a "huge success".

The organisation, which campaigns for and runs projects to bring clean water to developing countries, called for every restaurant in the capital to agree to offer customers tap water as well as bottled.

"We back the Standard's campaign wholeheartedly," said Alan Machin, Wateraid's head of fundraising. "Tap water in London is something we should be proud of, especially when 1.2 billion people around the world do not have clean access to water. There seems to be a real will backing this campaign."

Wateraid's own Tap Into Wateraid campaign asks restaurant patrons to donate towards water projects in developing countries. Banners in Crouch End has raised more than £10,000 for the scheme over three years.

Businesses participating in the Standard's campaign pledge to offer free tap water to customers without prejudice.
