Brits leading MTV charge

Radiohead, Coldplay and Floetry are flying the flag for the UK after making it onto the shortlist for this year's MTV Music Video Awards. All three acts were rewarded earlier this week with inclusion as nominees for the Mercury Music Prize.

Radiohead are the most nominated Brits for the MTV bash in New York on August 28 as they compete for four prizes.

The dark fairytale promo for recent single There There, which sees singer Thom Yorke flying through an eerie forest, is up for best special effects, art direction, cinematography and editing.

Coldplay are up for three gongs with the video for The Scientist, most of them higher profile prizes. They compete for best group video, breakthrough video and art direction.

The band are also set to perform at the ceremony at Radio City Music Hall.
South London R&B duo Floetry, are up for two awards including best breakthrough video.

The pair have made a bigger impact in the US than they have at home.
US star Missy Misdemeanor Elliott topped the nomination list with eight nods for her Work It video.

Justin Timberlake is just behind her with seven for his Cry Me A River - in which he gets revenge on a lookalike of former girlfriend Britney Spears - and Rock Your Body.

Country legend Johnny Cash landed six nominations. He said today: "It's been 48 years since I cut my first record and it's nice that people are still digging them up."

The top title, best video of the year, will be fought out between Cash (Hurt), Missy Elliott (Work It), Timberlake (Cry Me A River), Eminem (Lose Yourself) and his prodigy 50 Cent (In Da Club).

MTV UK & Ireland will screen the event on Saturday August 30. The TV audience will total around 1 billion.
