Britons staying behind

The former computer studies student was detained at Kunduz, Afghanistan, in December 2001. Born in Uganda, he moved to Britain when he was eight, then attended Edenham High School in Croydon. After A-levels at John Ruskin College, he took a two-year computing course at Nescot College in Epsom.
He is thought to have regularly worshipped at the Finsbury Park mosque in north London, where Muslim firebrand Abu Hamza gave his sermons.
Abassi's mother, Zumrati Juma, said she last saw her son in December 2000. In January 2002, he was arrested in Afghanistan as an "unlawful combatant" then transferred to Camp Delta where he remains.
UK officials last saw him in April last year. He kept silent for an hour as they tried to talk to him amid his family's reported concerns about his mental health.

Moazzam Begg, 36

Language teacher and law student Moazzam Begg, 36, from Sparkhill, Birmingham, was arrested by the CIA in the Pakistan capital of Islamabad in February 2002. He ran a bookshop selling religious books before moving his family to Afghanistan.
He was held for a year at Bagram airbase near Kabul before being sent to Guantanamo in spring 2003.

Martin Mubanga, 29

A former motorcycle courier from north London, Mubanga came to the UK from Zambia with his parents in the 1970s. Raised a Catholic before converting to Islam, he was arrested in Zambia.

Richard Belmar, 23

Believed to have attended a Catholic school in north London before converting to Islam, Belmar, of Maida Vale, worshipped at Regent's Park mosque. He was reported to have gone to Pakistan, where he was first detained, before the September 11 terror attacks.
