13 April 2012

A girl of three has drowned in a swimming pool on a Spanish holiday with her parents.

The toddler, who has not been named, is thought to have fallen into the private pool at a remote rented villa on the Costa del Sol.

Her parents made the tragic discovery after realising she was missing and embarking on a frantic search of the grounds of the detached country house in the village of Competa.

Drowning: The toddler's family were in Competa when she was discovered dead in a private swimming pool

They found her body at the bottom of the 8m by 4m pool.

The mayor of the village, Jose Luis Torres, said: 'The parents were inside the house and when they realised the girl was missing they began looking for her and found her in the bottom of the swimming pool.

'It was a tragic accident.'

Paramedics flew to the scene by helicopter and spent an hour trying to revive the little girl.

A government spokeswoman for the province of Malaga said: 'A three-year-old British girl died on Sunday evening while on holiday with her family.

'She appears to have fallen accidentally into a swimming pool and drowned.

'An autopsy will be carried out to establish the cause of death.

'The girl was British born and her parents are British.'

The death will be investigated by a judge at the nearby town of Torrox.

The inland village of Competa, 35 miles from Malaga, has stunning views of the Mediterranean coast and is popular with British expats and holidaymakers.
