Brave leukaemia girl, 16, says: No more treatment

13 April 2012

A 16-year-old leukaemia patient spoke today of her decision to forego further treatment and enjoy the rest of her life.

Josie Grove, from Corbridge, Northumberland, will accept a bravery award tomorrow after being nominated by her nurses.

The talented artist and swimmer was diagnosed with leukaemia two years ago when her family lived in Thailand.

They returned to the UK so Josie could be treated and she has had two bone marrow transplants and a gruelling course of anti-cancer drugs which have not succeeded.

She has now been told her condition is terminal. She said: "I've had enough of hospitals. A course of drugs I took in September left me feeling ill, shaky and aching, and it didn't do much to fight the cancer. I want to get on with my life and enjoy spending time with my family."

Her proud father Cliff, 46, said: "She is unique to be in this situation and deal with it in such a mature way.

"The transplants were pretty tough. She has just had enough of it and she is not frightened of the future and can understand it. She is a strong character and has even made it easier for us."

Mr Grove and wife Jacqui, 44, both jewellery designers, fully approve of her decision to halt treatment.

Josie will spend a quiet Christmas with her brothers Freddie, 13, and eight-month-old Charlie, and 11-year-old sister Libby. Josie's courage has been recognised by the Brave Hearts charity, based in Hexham.

She will be honoured along with 11 other local children at a ceremony at Newcastle United's St James's Park tomorrow.
