Boris: Lockerbie release was crazy

The Mayor said he would never have released al-Megrahi had he been 'in charge'

Boris Johnson has waded into the row over the release of the Lockerbie bomber calling it "crazy" and "mysterious".

The Mayor said the decision to release Libyan Abdelbaset al-Megrahi would never have been made had he been "in charge".

Mr Johnson said the move could only be justified if the original conviction was overturned: "It's a complete mockery of justice. It's a betrayal of the victims of the Lockerbie bomber. To have let him out in this mysterious hugger bugger way seems to be entirely baffling.

"It's the single most disreputable and mysterious episode in this Government's recent history." Mr Johnson made the comments in New York.
