Bomb kills Iranian nuclear scientist

12 April 2012

An Iranian nuclear scientist was killed and another injured today when motorcyclists attached bombs to their cars as they drove to work in Tehran.

The dead man was Majid Shahriari, of the nuclear engineering department at Shahid Beheshti university. The other, Fereidoun Abbasi, worked for the defence ministry.

Iran's state TV blamed Israel. At least two other Iranian nuclear scientists have been killed in recent years in what the government has alleged is an attempt by the West to damage its nuclear programme.

Many world powers claim Iran is developing nuclear weapons, and Tehran's refusal to limit its nuclear activities has led to rounds of UN sanctions against the country.

The man killed today was identified as Majid Shahriari, a member of the nuclear engineering faculty at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran. His wife, who was in the car with him, was wounded.

The second attack seriously wounded nuclear physicist Fereidoun Abbasi, a defence ministry laser expert and a member of Iran's Revolutionary Guard. His wife was also in the car with him, and she was also wounded.

Iran's official IRNA news agency said Mr Abbasi was in stable condition in the hospital.

The attacks bore similarities to another in January that killed Tehran University professor Masoud Ali Mohammadi, a senior physics professor. He was killed when a bomb-rigged motorcycle exploded near his car as he was about to leave for work.
