Beyond the Footsie: Thursday close

12 April 2012

THE sell-off on both sides of the Atlantic caught smaller companies in its wake, sending the FTSE SmallCap index down 16.2 points to 2047.2.

Splits capital investment trusts again led the fallers as investors fretted over the trusts' investments in each other. St David Preferred shed 20p to 5 1/4p, while Exeter Smaller Cos ended down 6p at 5 1/2p, New Star Enhanced lost 5p to 5 1/2p and CI Income Fund slipped 2 1/2p to 2 3/4p.

Recruitment and training firm Quantica dropped 21 1/2p to 32 1/2p after reporting a sharp drop in interim sales and earnings. Web publisher Ingenta fell 45p to 95 1/2p. It warned full-year sales would miss the target in its publisher services unit.

Former online directories business Scoot.com fell 20% to 0.40p. The company, now a cash-shell following the sale of its core business to BT Group, said it would change its name to Timeload. Its managing director has resigned.

Multimedia broadcast firm Galleon Holdings collected 1/4p to 1 1/2p. Hollywood animation studio JC2 is to take a 50% stake in its space-age animation project Astro Knights. Investors bought into Symphony Plastic, ahead 4p to 40 1/2p, after it disclosed it had won a £4.35m contract to supply plastic carrier bags to Somerfield, the supermarkets chain.

Legendary Investments, in which entrepreneur Shami Ahmed's investment vehicle holds 15%, gained 1/4 to 1 1/4p. Posting narrower full-year losses, it said the value of its portfolio had risen slightly over the last six months and that it was 'reasonably positioned' to weather turbulent markets.
