Here is this week's run-down of who is making the headlines on the City pages:

The Business

UK productivity
OFFICIAL UK productivity statistics are significantly overstating Britain's performance, according to new research. The true rate of growth in output per worker was 0.8%, rather than the 1.7% claimed by official figures, says Bridgewell Securities.

Small businesses
SMALL and medium-sized businesses in the UK miss out on interest payments of £422m a year on deposit accounts because they do not shop around for better deals.

The Independent on Sunday

BP downgrade
BP is preparing to downgrade up to 3% of its oil reserves, according to investment bank Goldman Sachs. One City analyst said: 'This would be pretty embarrassing after everything Shell has been through.'

Boeing-Westland
BOEING is in talks with the British-based helicopter maker AugustaWestland about forming a joint bid for what could be one of the UK's largest-ever arms contracts - worth up to £10bn.

The Observer

Barclays close on Telegraph
THE Barclay brothers, owners of the Scotsman group, have met the £700m price tag put on the Telegraph titles in the tense auction being run by Lazards investment bank. The move marks a decisive step in the auction process, which is being contested by the Daily Mail group, in alliance with private equity firm CVC, and 3i.

JP Morgan/Cazenove
US banking giant JP Morgan Chase is waiting in the wings to acquire the blue-blooded UK stockbroker Cazenove, according to City investment bankers.

Sainsbury's
SHAREHOLDERS are expected to vote down the company's remuneration report next month in a highly embarrassing move for the struggling supermarkets group, of which the Sainsbury family owns 35%.

Sunday Times

Treasury caves in
THE Treasury will lift the price cap on low-cost savings products this week in response to sustained pressure from the life insurance industry. It will raise the 1% limit on annual management charges, probably to 1.5%, after warnings from leading firms that the original cap would lead to significant job losses or a withdrawal of firms from Britain.

Gambling laws
GAMBLERS are to be given the chance to win unlimited prizes on fruit machines, opening the way for American-style £1m jackpots in casinos. Tessa Jowell, the culture secretary, will announce tomorrow that the government is to lift the prize limit of £1,000 as part of a relaxation of gambling laws.

Deutsche Bank
DEUTSCHE Bank failed to declare that its trading desk had built up a large stake in Monsoon, the fashion retailer, in an apparent breach of the Companies Act and Takeover Panel rules. Monsoon has asked the Financial Services Authority (FSA) to investigate the lack of disclosure by the German investment bank.

City's top 100
MORE than half of the City of London's 100 richest people, controlling personal wealth of £9bn, come from the two most secretive sectors in the financial capital - hedge funds and private-equity firms - according to the paper's own research.

Sunday Telegraph

'Hippocratic oath'
AN independent inquiry led by Sir Richard Sykes, the former chairman of GlaxoSmithKline, will this week call on the investment industry to sign up to a new code of conduct in a bid to restore public trust.

Vandevelde
LUC Vandevelde, the recently ousted chairman of Marks & Spencer, is hoping to swap bras and blouses for budgies with a £200m swoop on the out-of-town retailer Pets at Home.

Nats
NATIONAL Air Traffic Services is expected to signal its return to financial stability after its near collapse three years ago by announcing that it has made its first ever profit, of around £2m.

Berlin inquiry
A number of UK-listed companies have demanded a London Stock Exchange investigation after they found that their shares are being traded on the Berlin-Bremen exchange without their knowledge or authority.
