Astoria to be knocked down for Crossrail

Music venue the Astoria is to be demolished to make way for a new Crossrail station, it has been confirmed.

The 2,000 capacity former theatre in Soho, which has hosted Rolling Stones and Nirvana, will be replaced with a concert hall in the new development in Tottenham Court Road.

Mayor Ken Livingstone's announcement comes after an unsuccessful campaign, supported by bands including Kaiser Chiefs and Maximo Park, to save the much loved venue.
