Arts chief 'held on indecent assault'

The director of the new £46 million Baltic arts centre has been arrested after an alleged indecent assault in London.

Stephen Snoddy, 44, took charge of Newcastle's flagship gallery six months ago. He has been suspended from his post.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said today that an allegation of indecent assault in the Homerton area last month was being investigatedand a man in his forties had been arrested. The Baltic, the biggest British arts centre outside London and known as the "Tate Modern of the North", opened two years ago.

The gallery said finance director Andrew Lovett wou ld take charge until the investigation was complete.
