Two teenagers are due in court in connection with an airgun attack near a school in which 11 youngsters were injured.

No-one was seriously hurt in the incident in Auchinleck, East Ayrshire, yesterday afternoon.

Officers were called to reports that an airgun had been fired in the town's Church Street, near Auchinleck Academy, at around 1.40pm.

Chief Superintendent John Thomson said five girls and six boys between the ages of 12 and 16 were struck by pellets, mainly on their legs and torsos.

It is understood one pupil remains in Crosshouse Hospital, near Kilmarnock.

Two males, aged 15 and 18, have been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

They are due to appear at Ayr Sheriff Court.

Local MP and MSP Cathy Jamieson said the incident, which happened less than half a mile from the school, highlighted the danger air weapons pose to communities.

Plans are currently under way to hand responsibility for airgun legislation from Westminster to the Scottish Government.
