12 years for man who used his car to kill teenager for throwing eggs

Jailed: Abid Kwaik rammed the teenagers' car off the road
12 April 2012

A man who used his car as "a weapon" to kill a teenager and cause serious brain injuries to another in a row over egg throwing has been jailed for 12 years.

Abid Kwaik, 38, drove after three teenagers who pelted his brother's restaurant with eggs from the windows of their Fiesta. Kwaik chased them in his Honda NSX sports car for a mile from the Sahara Lounge in Stanmore.

As the two vehicles reached The Common, Kwaik pulled alongside 19-year-old Shenol Ahmet's car and rammed into its side.

Mr Ahmet lost control and careered into a tree. He died four days later in hospital. Front seat passenger Corey Holliday, then 18, received serious head injuries and spent five months in a coma and now requires 24-hour treatment.

Rear seat passenger Luke Hall, also 18 at the time, suffered several broken bones. Kwaik, of Stanmore, was convicted of manslaughter and two counts of unlawful wounding.

Judge Jeffrey Pegden, QC, told him: "You used your vehicle as a weapon, intending that the other vehicle should lose control. You intended to teach them a lesson and, in my judgment, intended that they should lose control of their vehicle."

He added: "No sentence this court passes can in any way compensate for the loss of life you have caused or restore the health of the young passenger. No sentence can mitigate the grief of their families."
