A section of the street where George Floyd died is to be renamed in his honour, it has been reported.

Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis will retain its name except between the two blocks where Mr Floyd was killed.

This stretch, between 37th and 39th street, will be known as “George Perry Floyd Jr. Place”, according to local paper the Star Tribune.

The City Council approved the naming on Friday, and it is understood mayor Jacob Frey will give the plans the green light.

Mr Floyd, a black man, died in handcuffs on May 25 after police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes.

The incident sparked worldwide protests, as people called for an end to racism and police brutality.

Months after Mr Floyd's death, the intersection on Chicago Avenue remains barricaded and now holds a memorial.

A group of demonstrators has occupied the area, saying they would not leave until the city meets their demands, including funding for anti-racism training.

The city had announced plans to reopen 38th Street this summer but backed off in a bit to avoid further confrontation.
