A further 30 people have died after contracting coronavirus in the UK, with more than 2,400 new cases confirmed amid fears of a surge in infections.

It is the highest daily death toll since July. As of 9am on Tuesday, there had been a further 2,420 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus. Overall, 352,520 cases have been confirmed.

The figures for new cases and deaths do not include those from Northern Ireland and only represent those for Britain, according to the dashboard.

The Government said 41,584 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Tuesday, an increase of 30 on the day before.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 57,400 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

It comes after figures showing that the UK’s coronavirus infection rate has risen above 20 cases in 100,000 people — the level at which the Government considers imposing quarantine restrictions on foreign countries

A further 2,948 cases of coronavirus were confirmed in the 24 hours up to 9am on Monday, after 2,988 cases were announced on Sunday — the highest figure since May 22.

In England, a further eight people who tested positive for coronavirus died in hospitals, NHS England said on Tuesday.

This brings the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals to 29,619.

The patients were aged between 43 and 92 and all had known underlying health conditions.

The dates of the deaths were between September 5 and September 7.

Another three deaths were reported with no positive Covid-19 test result.
