James Milner says Liverpool "deserve" to beat Tottenham and win the Champions League final after coming up short against Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

The Reds narrowly missed out on a first English league crown in almost three decades despite collecting 97 points as City retained the title won 12 months ago.

After crashing out of both domestic cups early, Liverpool are in danger of finishing the season empty-handed as they prepare to face Spurs in the European season's showpiece match.

Milner hopes the squad's efforts are rewarded with a trophy, in what would be the sixth time the club have been crowned European champions, on June 1 in Madrid.

"When you think of 30 wins out of 38, at the start of the season you'd like to think that's good enough," Milner told the club's official website.

"But obviously that shows how good Man City are as well. It's disappointing," Milner told the club's official website.

"We have to be proud of what we've achieved. Unfortunately it's just short, but obviously what we did earlier in the week [versus Barcelona] gives us a chance to go and redeem ourselves and get a piece of silverware because I think everyone deserves a bit of silverware.

"I think the team especially, these boys, how they grind out results.

He added: "The fans have been unbelievable all year, they've lifted us when we've needed them, they've stuck with us when it's been tough in games and like I say, the boys deserve a bit of silverware, but the fans do too."
