AFC Wimbledon are hoping to raise £1million after launching their new seat debenture scheme.

The club’s finances, like many lower league sides, have been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic and are in need of an injection.

The Dons have already been boosted as less than five per cent of season ticket holders asked for a refund after the previous campaign was curtailed, which saved £500,000.

Now the club are hoping to raise £1m after launching a debenture scheme for their new stadium at Plough Lane, which essentially enables fans to buy the first right to use a particular seat for a period of 10 years.

The price for a debenture is around £500 to £600, but supporters can then make savings as their season ticket will be discounted.

Debenture holders will also get 11 seasons for the price of 10 because, as there is so much uncertainty over when next season will start, it won’t count as one of the 10 years on the debenture.

The scheme is opening to different groups over the next month and currently season ticket holders, who have held one for eight or more years, and club volunteers from last season can get involved.

With matches currently being played behind closed doors, all debenture holders will get a free cardboard cut out of themselves to represent them in the stadium until fans return.

Wimbledon hope by raising £1m they can support a basic playing budget and other essential operations for the coming season.
