Designer interiors: from the House of Gucci villa on Airbnb to Karl Lagerfeld’s estate at auction
High-fashion interiors are in the spotlight this week. In cinemas from Friday, Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci is one of the most talked-about movies of the year.
With Lady Gaga, who recently revealed she stayed in character as Patrizia Reggiani for 18 months, and Adam Driver, who plays Maurizio Gucci, at the helm of the true-crime comedy’s star-studded cast.
With six opulent suites by French designer Jacques Garcia, whose previous projects include the royal apartments at Versailles, and 17th-century furniture sourced from fine arts auction houses, it’s little wonder Scott chose the historic estate for a Gucci family gathering in the film.
The same week as the House of Gucci release comes news that the private collections of Karl Lagerfeld, the late fashion designer credited with reinventing Chanel in the Eighties, are to go to auction.
The first two sales catalogues feature never-before-seen photographs of Lagerfeld’s minimalist two-storey apartment on Rue des Saints-Pères in Paris, a futuristic home he likened to a “spaceship” on Quai Voltaire, and a grand 19th-century house in Louveciennes.
The listing of his eclectic design pieces — from silverware to sofas, some pictured in his homes — gives a rare glimpse at the fascinating spaces in which he lived.
“We need houses as we need clothes, architecture stimulates fashion,” said Lagerfeld.
If this week is anything to go by, the two still make for compelling viewing.
