Tom Hanks puts Airstream trailer he used while filming Forrest Gump up for auction

Bonhams

Staycationers unable to book holiday accommodation this summer could find a solution with added star appeal as Tom Hanks is putting the Airstream trailer he used while filming several of his biggest films up for auction.

Hanks bought the 33ft silver trailer in 1993 because he found the decor of regular trailers “ugly” and “uncomfortable”.

The Oscar-winner had it fitted out to his own specification with a desk and cupboard, a futon platform and room for a small table and chairs as well as a Hollywood lights mirror in the bathroom.

He travelled with it across America while making his blockbuster movies – from South Carolina where he filmed Forrest Gump to California, for Angels and Demons – and would use it to practice his lines, relax and entertain other stars.

"I shan’t forget night shoots on Gump and The Green Mile with the windows open and the cool air coming in. Or the time Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton and I watched a Buster Keaton documentary on the TV – before running through the Forest Lawn cemetery in our Apollo 13 costumes to pay homage at his grave,” said Hanks.

He has put the Airstream and all its contents up for auction via Bonhams on Friday, August 13, with an estimate of £109,000 - £181,000 ($150,000 - $250,000).
