Aldgate, on the eastern fringe of the City, used to be a dead zone after working hours but developers have finally woken up to its location so close to a prosperous banking community.

Berkeley Group is opening up seven-acre Goodman's Fields in Alie Street, formerly a business park, as a new "urban quarter" with homes, shops, restaurants and a public park and plaza.

Sleek, glass-clad towers blend with low-rise buildings. Catalina House, the latest phase to be launched, has 72 apartments, each with a balcony overlooking either the plaza or courtyard gardens. Prices start from £499,950. Call 020 7217 1000.
